Ink brings together movement, sound, and visual composition in a collaboration between choreographer Huang Yi and audiovisual artist Ryoichi Kurokawa.

Drawing on the line work of calligrapher Tong Yang-Tze, the performance deconstructs and reassembles elements from her Silent Music series, translating ink, gesture, and sound into a shared stage language.

Movement shifts between restraint and velocity as dancers navigate contrasting tempos and textures. At times contained and precise, at others rapid and forceful, their physicality traces lines through space, treating the stage surface as a field for mark-making rather than representation.

Visual elements evolve in parallel. Kurokawa transforms ink forms into light-based pathways that respond to motion, layering projection and sound into a continuous visual flow. The result is a sequence of images that accumulate, dissolve, and reconfigure as the performance unfolds.

Ink is an original production by Huang Yi Studio +, co-commissioned by the National Taichung Theatre and the National Theatre, Taipei. The work premiered in June 2023. Huang Yi was previously seen in Abu Dhabi during The Arts Centre’s inaugural season with Huang Yi & Kuka.

Recommended for ages 10+

The performance contains flashing lights and loud music.

There will be a one-time entry at 13 minutes after the show starts.
No entry will be permitted after the time

Huang Yi

Huang Yi is a Taiwanese dancer and choreographer whose work brings human movement into dialogue with robotic and multimedia systems. Working across choreography, invention, and video, he develops performances shaped by continuous motion, mechanical processes, and data-driven structures.

His work HUANG YI & KUKA, created with a programmed industrial robot, has toured internationally since 2015. Huang has also presented large-scale interdisciplinary works, including Under the Horizon (2018), A Million Miles Away (2019), and Ink, which premiered in 2023 at Taiwan’s national theatres.

His practice has been recognised through artist residencies at Taiwan’s National Theatre & Concert Hall and the National Performing Arts Centre, and by his inclusion in Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch.”
